My friend Ed runs a local charity dedicated to matching schools in need with supplies and monetary donations. As a favor I edited a news release for him.
Here’s the release as I received it:
Dear Media:
We would like to announce that Smartkids.sc, inc. is officially a 501(c)(3) tax exempt Public Charity!
We would also like to invite Teachers to submit their requests for special needs and classroom expendables. We have donors waiting to donate to the schools of their choice, but there are no teachers from those schools requesting anything yet.
This year we are concentrating on supporting the elementary and middle schools near North Augusta and South Edgefield County.
We are looking forward to our second year of supporting teachers and students in the CSRA Area!
regards, Ed Elser, Executive Director, SmartKids.SC, inc.

Here is my edited version:
Media friends,
SmartKids.SC is pleased to announce that we have been officially recognized as a 501(c)(3) charitable organization. Now, the donations that help local schools get the supplies they need are also tax-deductible.
We’re also happy to report that we already have donors waiting to help. Local teachers can submit their school supply requests here:

SmartKids.SC is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization dedicated to assisting schools in the western/Savannah River area of South Carolina. We help match donors with schools in need and run academic contests with prizes donated by local businesses. Want to know how you can help? Visit http://www.smartkids.sc or call 803-613-1387.
Besides the surface edits, I made two important changes that I pointed out to Ed. First, I included a link after the call to action for donation requests. If people don’t have a way to immediately act on what they’ve read, they are far less likely to do it. Second, I wrote a blurb about the charity for Ed to include at the bottom of every news release. That way, people who need a reminder or people receiving his news releases for the first time will know what’s going on.
